A: Did you know it's Chinese New
Year next week, Tom?
B: No, I didn't. Is it a special
time of year?
A: Yes, it's the most important
time of the year for most Chinese families.
B: Really? What do you normally
do?
A: In Taiwan, a few days before
the New Year, we clean the house and decorate the walls with red
paper. Then on New Year's Eve, the whole family has a special
dinner together, we all stay up until late, and at midnight we
set off lots of fireworks to welcome the first day of the New
Year.
B: Do you eat any special food?
A: Yes, we eat dishes which will
bring good luck in the New Year. After dinner, we often go to
the flower market. We buy some flowers and small trees. The
trees represent good fortune as well.
B: Fascinating!
